The Ultimate Candle Buying Guide

Ahh, candles, is there any better way to set the mood and create a beautiful atmosphere than with a gorgeous glowing candle burning away in the corner? Didn’t think so! No matter your home, mood or taste, candles will absolutely bring a little metaphoric and literal light to your everyday routine. Whether you need something invigorating for the morning, soothing for a stressful working day or calming to switch off during evenings with the family, there is something out there for you – it’s just a question of how to find it! Now, not all candles are made equally so, it can get tricky if you’re going into your search blind. Avoid any buyers’ regret by following these nifty tips for nailing that candle purchase the first time around…

Select the right material

Materials really matter when you’re shopping for candles. The most popular options on the market include:

  • Paraffin: These are usually the cheapest option available and they’re often used for scented candles that give off a very powerful smell. However, these can contain some nasty chemicals, create a dirty burn and they’re used up terribly quickly. This scenting method tends to not be the most natural or gentle for your home, so keep this in mind when you’re being tempted by a seemingly good deal – with candles, you generally get what you pay for.
  • Beeswax: Beeswax is very pure and natural and is often used in luxury candles. The burn time is slow and the glow this wax gives off is incredibly warm and inviting, however, this material does not mix well with other scents. You will most likely find that beeswax candles rely on the natural wax scent instead of incorporating other aromas.
  • Soy: Soy is the perfect compromise between artificial paraffin and unscented beeswax! It’s a gorgeous, soft wax that mixes beautifully with all kinds of different aromas. Soy candles will burn slowly, give off a gentle glow and fill your room with enticing scent profiles.

Consider the shape, size and design

Although you will most likely be purchasing your candle based on its scent, you should consider its shape, size and design as well! Different shapes give off very different moods, for example, long thin dinner candles are incredibly formal whilst thick, large cylinder shapes are more inviting and chilled-out. If you really want an extravagant look, consider opting for an intricately carved wax model. This is great for big occasions like Christmas or wedding receptions.

Scented or unscented

This will largely depend on your wax decision, if you want unscented then go for the luxe beeswax option. Hunting for more ambience? Soy candles are your answer! The scent profile is important, it can make such a difference to a room! Fresh scents are great for the bathroom, kitchen and home office – think mint, lime, lemon, coconut and pineapple. If you want something slightly cosier, steer towards scents such as amber, sandalwood, sea salt or pink pepper. When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with a well-balanced floral scent! Look for jasmine, geranium, lily, rosewood and sage for a gorgeously harmonised candle. Soy candles are also fantastic for scent layering, burning multiple scents is the ultimate way to create a personalised and unique tone in your home.

Wick type

Wicks make a difference, people! Be sure to look for a cotton wick, this makes sure that your candle burns evenly and at a slow pace, creating a better atmosphere for the room. This will also give off minimum smoke and doesn’t need trimming, so cotton really is the ideal wick material! If you want a candle that gives off the maximum scent and light, opt for a multiple wick style – three is great for full impact.

Get shopping to find your perfect candle! These tips won’t steer you wrong.
